Natural stone isn’t one material — it’s a category covering dozens of distinct surfaces, each with its own hardness, porosity, and chemical sensitivity. What’s safe for granite isn’t safe for marble. What works on slate can destroy saltillo. And the most common household cleaners — vinegar, all-purpose sprays, bathroom cleaners — are acidic enough to etch calcium-based stones like marble, travertine, and limestone on contact.

Etching isn’t a stain. It’s physical damage to the surface of the stone — a dull, hazy mark where the acid has dissolved the polished finish. It can’t be cleaned away. It requires professional honing to remove.

Even stones that aren’t acid-sensitive — granite, quartzite, slate — are porous enough to absorb staining liquids without a proper sealer, and hard enough to scratch and dull under the wrong cleaning pad or abrasive.

Professional stone care starts with identifying the stone correctly, then applying the right product and method for that specific surface. That’s the difference between a clean that restores and one that damages.

Natural stone requires cleaning products that are pH-neutral — not acidic and not strongly alkaline. We use solutions formulated specifically for stone, along with application methods matched to the surface type, finish, and condition. This helps remove soil, residue, mineral buildup, and everyday contamination without etching, dulling, or weakening the stone.

Marble and travertine require a different approach than granite or slate, while Saltillo needs different chemistry altogether. Each surface reacts differently to moisture, cleaners, pressure, and sealing products, so we adjust the process to the material instead of using a one-size-fits-all method. Using the right cleaning and sealing approach helps protect the finish, preserve the natural appearance of the stone, and prevent avoidable damage over time.

Natural stone is porous — it absorbs liquids faster than most people expect. A glass of red wine, a splash of olive oil, or even clean water left standing can work into unsealed stone before you have a chance to wipe it up. Sealing fills those pores with a penetrating barrier that slows absorption, giving spills time to be cleaned up rather than immediately setting as stains.

Different stones need different sealers. Highly polished marble and granite need a sealer that doesn't affect the surface sheen. Honed or matte surfaces can take more penetrating protection. Saltillo needs a sealer matched to its clay-based composition and higher porosity. We assess the stone and environment before recommending anything, and discuss the options before applying. We seal after every professional cleaning as the final step that makes the clean last.

Honed finish:

Smooth, matte — no reflective gloss. Conceals scratches more readily. Common on floors and bathroom surfaces.

Polished finish:

High gloss with full reflective depth — brings out the stone’s natural color and veining most dramatically. Best for lower-traffic areas or surfaces that are regularly maintained.

When stone has been dulled by etching, scratched by abrasion, or worn by years of foot traffic and improper cleaning, it needs more than cleaning. Restoration uses diamond honing pads — working through progressively finer grits — to remove the damaged surface layer and expose the intact stone beneath. Once honed, the stone is polished to the desired finish.

Restoration also addresses lippage (unevenness between tiles), deep scratches, chipping at edges, and grout that has become recessed or stained beyond cleaning. We assess the full scope during the onsite estimate.

We identify the specific stone type, assess the finish, soiling, etching, and damage, and determine what services are appropriate before any work begins. We tell you what cleaning can address and where restoration is needed.

02pH-Neutral Cleaning

The full surface is cleaned with products formulated for the specific stone type — reaching into voids and grout lines, removing hard water deposits and buildup without etching or dulling.

03Honing and Restoration (if needed)

For etched or damaged surfaces, diamond honing removes the damaged layer and restores a uniform finish across the stone.

04Polishing (if applicable)

Honed stone is brought to the specified gloss level — matte, satin, or high polish.

05Sealing

A penetrating sealer matched to the stone type, finish, and environment is applied. We discuss the sealing option before we start.

06Final Walkthrough

We walk every surface with you before we leave.

Natural stone is a broad category — and the differences between stone types matter more than most people realize. Marble etches from vinegar. Granite stains if unsealed. Saltillo requires entirely different chemistry than travertine. Slate can spall from moisture infiltration. Using the wrong product or method on the wrong stone causes damage that ranges from difficult to irreversible. Before any product touches any surface, our technicians identify the stone correctly and select the approach that fits it — not a one-size process applied to everything with the word "stone" in it.

Marble

Polished or honed stone used for floors, countertops, and feature areas. Acid-sensitive and prone to etching, requires pH-neutral care and restores beautifully when properly treated.

Travertine

A porous, limestone-based stone with natural voids and texture. Common in West Texas homes, travertine needs careful cleaning and sealing to protect its surface.

Granite

A hard, durable stone used for countertops, floors, and commercial spaces. More acid-resistant than marble, but still needs sealing to help prevent staining.

Limestone

A soft, porous stone that scratches and etches easily. It requires gentle cleaning, stone-safe products, and proper sealing to maintain its appearance.

Slate

A dense stone with varied texture, hardness, and finish. Professional cleaning and sealing help protect the surface and reduce moisture-related flaking.

Sandstone

A soft, highly porous stone that absorbs liquids quickly. Careful cleaning and sealing help protect it from staining, moisture, and premature wear.

Saltillo

A soft, porous Mexican clay tile common in Southwestern homes. It often requires stripping old sealer, deep cleaning, and resealing with compatible products.

Terrazzo

A polished composite surface made from stone chips set in cement or epoxy. Professional cleaning and polishing help maintain clarity, shine, and durability.

Onyx

A translucent, dramatic stone that is soft and acid-sensitive. It requires gentle, pH-neutral cleaning and careful restoration to protect its finish.

Quartzite

A hard natural stone often mistaken for marble. Durable and generally acid-resistant, quartzite still benefits from professional cleaning and sealing.

Can I use vinegar or all-purpose cleaner on my stone floors?

No — for most natural stone, absolutely not. Vinegar, citrus-based cleaners, and most all-purpose sprays are acidic. Marble, travertine, limestone, and onyx are calcium-based and will etch on contact with acid — producing permanent dull, hazy marks that require honing to remove. Granite and quartzite are more acid-resistant but still benefit from pH-neutral cleaning. If you’re unsure, use nothing until we’ve identified your stone.

My stone looks dull even after I clean it. What's happening?

Dull patches that don’t respond to cleaning are almost always etching — surface damage from acidic products or spills. It can’t be cleaned away. Professional honing removes the damaged layer and restores the original finish. We assess during the quote visit and tell you honestly which applies.

How often should natural stone be professionally cleaned and sealed?

Once a year is appropriate for most residential stone in moderate use. Shower stone, kitchen countertops, and high-traffic floors benefit from more frequent attention. Outdoor stone exposed to West Texas weather and UV may need resealing more frequently. Your technician will give a specific recommendation after seeing the surface.

Does sealing change how the stone looks?

Standard penetrating sealers are invisible once cured — they don’t change color or sheen. Color-enhancing sealers deepen the natural tone of the stone, which some customers prefer on slate or sandstone. We discuss the options before applying anything.

Do you work on stone countertops as well as floors?

Yes — countertops, backsplashes, bathroom vanities, fireplace surrounds, shower walls, and any other stone surface. The cleaning, sealing, and restoration approach is the same regardless of the surface orientation.

What's special about travertine compared to other stone?

Travertine has natural voids that collect debris, and is one of the most acid-sensitive stones we work on. It’s also extremely common in West Texas homes.
