Do You Have to Use Your Insurance Company’s Water Restoration Contractor?

A burst pipe, an overflowing appliance, or a ceiling leak can turn an ordinary day into a water damage emergency. You call your insurance company, and the representative offers to send a “preferred” restoration contractor. In the rush to get help, that recommendation can sound like a requirement.

You do not have to assume the insurance company’s recommendation is your only option. Ask whether you can use the water damage restoration company you trust, and review any relevant terms in your policy. You deserve a clear explanation of your options before someone starts work in your home.

What does “preferred contractor” mean?

An insurance company may regularly refer policyholders to certain contractors. A referral can be convenient, but it does not automatically mean that contractor is the best fit for your home. Your priorities are a prompt response, careful work, clear communication, and thorough drying.

If your insurer suggests a company, ask: “Is this a recommendation, or does my policy require it?” If you’re told there is a restriction, ask for the specific policy language in writing. Confirm whether your choice affects payment or any benefits offered through the insurer’s contractor program. Coverage and claim decisions depend on your policy and the circumstances of the loss.

Why your choice of restoration team matters

Water does not stay where you can see it. It can move beneath flooring and into walls, subfloors, and ceiling cavities. Removing visible water is only the beginning. A restoration team also needs to identify affected materials, dry them, and check their progress.

When comparing water damage restoration companies, ask how they will:

Those questions help you choose a team based on the work your home needs, whether you found them yourself or through an insurer’s referral.

How Carpet Tech helps after water damage

Carpet Tech’s water damage restoration team answers emergency calls 24/7. Our IICRC-certified technicians assess affected areas, use moisture meters and thermal imaging when needed, extract standing water, and set up professional drying equipment. We return during the drying process to check moisture readings and adjust equipment.

We’ve worked alongside adjusters from major insurance carriers. We document affected areas, moisture levels, materials, photos, and work performed so your adjuster has information to review. You can choose Carpet Tech and still report your claim to your insurance company. We coordinate on the restoration work while your carrier makes its own coverage and payment decisions.

Our goal is to do the job thoroughly and help you move toward normal as quickly as the damage and drying conditions allow. If repairs are needed after drying, CT Construction can help with the rebuild.

What should you do first?

  1. Protect people first. Avoid standing water near electrical hazards. If it’s safe, stop the source of the water.
  2. Document the damage. Take photos or video of affected areas and belongings.
  3. Report the loss to your insurer. Ask about coverage, your deductible, and any steps your policy requires.
  4. Call the restoration team you want to evaluate your home. Prompt action can help limit further damage. Keep records of the work for your adjuster.

Can I call Carpet Tech before the insurance adjuster visits?

Yes. If water is actively spreading, call for help promptly and tell us you’re opening an insurance claim. Notify your insurer as your policy requires. When it’s safe, document the damage before work begins and keep invoices and other records. Your insurer will determine what the policy covers.

Your home. Your choice.

An insurer’s preferred contractor is an option to consider. You should also feel comfortable asking questions and selecting a restoration company you trust, subject to your policy terms. When water damage strikes, Carpet Tech is ready to respond, explain the work, and coordinate documentation with your carrier.
