Standard HVAC filters catch dust, pollen, and larger particles — but they’re not designed to address biological contaminants. Mold spores that develop on the evaporator coil, bacteria that accumulate in the ductwork, and viruses that circulate from room to room pass right through standard filtration and get redistributed through every vent in your home.

This matters more in West Texas than in most places. Long, hot summers mean your HVAC runs for months at a time — and anything that grows on the evaporator coil or in the ductwork during that time gets continuously cycled through your living space.

UV Coil Sterilization

The most common UV application for residential HVAC systems. A UV-C lamp is installed inside the air handler, positioned to shine directly on the evaporator coil — the component where mold and biological growth most commonly develops in AC systems. The UV-C light continuously irradiates the coil surface, preventing mold and bacterial growth from establishing. This keeps the coil cleaner, reduces musty odors, and improves system efficiency by preventing the biological buildup that restricts coil performance. UV-C light operates at approximately 254nm — the wavelength that disrupts microorganism DNA and prevents reproduction.

More comprehensive than coil sterilization, in-duct air purifiers treat the air as it moves through the duct system — not just the coil surface. Systems like whole-home air scrubbers use UV-C light combined with photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) technology to neutralize biological contaminants, break down volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and reduce odors throughout the home. Some advanced systems also produce low-level hydrogen peroxide ions that actively seek out contaminants on surfaces and in the air rather than waiting for them to pass through the unit. These systems are used in hospitals, schools, hotels, and commercial facilities, and are recommended by the CDC, WHO, and ASHRAE for air disinfection.

What UV and air purification does not replace: filtration. UV systems address biological contaminants — mold, bacteria, viruses. They don’t remove dust, pollen, pet dander, or other particles. A complete indoor air quality approach pairs UV/purification with appropriate filtration. We’ll discuss both when we assess your home.

Think of it this way: Operating a UV system with a degraded bulb is just like running your HVAC with a dirty filter.

UV coil sterilization keeps the coil cleaner, which supports better efficiency. The effect varies depending on how much biological buildup was present before installation.

How often do UV bulbs need to be replaced?

Annually, regardless of whether the bulb still appears lit. UV-C output degrades significantly over time even when the bulb is still producing visible light. Running a UV system with a degraded bulb provides little benefit. We’ll give you the specific replacement schedule for whatever system we install.

Is UV light safe — will it affect my family or pets?

The UV-C light is contained within the HVAC system and ductwork. It’s not released into the rooms of your home and doesn’t create any exposure risk during normal operation. UV-C used in air purification doesn’t produce ozone — properly specified systems are safe for families, pets, and people with sensitivities.

Should I clean my ducts before installing UV?

In many cases, yes — particularly if the ducts haven’t been cleaned in several years. A UV system installed in heavily contaminated ductwork will have to work against an existing problem while it’s trying to prevent new growth. Starting with clean ducts gives the system the best environment to work in. We can assess both and coordinate accordingly.
