There are a few sounds that no home or business owner likes to hear. One of the scariest? Running water. The source? Who knows, must be a leak! The most common water emergencies are the result of leaking fixtures (shower, toilet, or sink), blocked drains (sink or toilet backing up), or a burst pipe.
In any water leak situation a quick response is critical to limiting the water damage. If you discover a leak in your home or business, here’s what you need to do.
SHUT OFF THE WATER
Before taking any other step, it is important to stop the flow of water through your building. Locate the water meter and close the valve. Once you’ve stopped the water, open a non-leaking faucet to drain all of the water from your pipes.
FIND THE SOURCE
Once you’ve shut off the water, it’s time to start searching for the source of your leak. The source is usually pretty obvious, but could be hidden behind drywall. It’s probably best to wait for an expert before opening the wall to locate the leak.
START DRYING
This is a big one. You want to dry everything out to protect your walls, ceilings, or flooring and to prevent mold. Depending on the size of your leak, you will likely need towels, fans, and maybe even a shop vacuum.
