Now that your living room is clean, it’s time to make your kitchen and bathroom truly shine. Our spring cleaning steps for these rooms are similar to the living room cleanup: declutter, dust, disinfect, and our personal favorite delegate. Let’s get started!
DECLUTTER & DISCARD
Remove anything from these rooms that doesn’t belong. Remember our mantra from last month: Don’t put it down. Put it away. Spend a quick 15-minutes getting rid of non-kitchen or bathroom essentials.
After decluttering, move on to discarding. Throw out any expired food, products, and things you no longer use. Combine things you have in multiples. For example, you really only need one bag of flour in the kitchen, not three half bags*. Consolidate these into a single canister to open up cabinet space. In the bathroom, put loose cotton balls, q-tips, and other items into a single container.
*Pro Tip: Do you regularly find yourself at the grocery store wondering if you have staple items (like flour) at home? Instead of purchasing more just in case, keep an inventory of these things in a note on your phone.
DUST
Before disinfecting countertops and cabinets, it’s a good idea to get rid of dust. Kitchens and bathrooms tend to have more forgotten spaces for dust to collect in between deep cleans. Add these areas to your checklist before moving on:
- Ceilings & wall corners
- Tops of cabinets (Don’t forget the medicine cabinet)
- Top of refrigerator & vent hood
- Air vents and fans
- Blinds or window treatments
Finish off your dusting adventure with a deep sweep.
DISINFECT
This step is incredibly important in your kitchen and bathroom, two areas that act as little petri dishes for germs*. Remove and wash all appliance knobs, wipe down surfaces and cabinet pulls in both rooms. Pay extra attention to areas around sinks and the shower head as these are sometimes missed during regular cleanings. In the bathroom, disinfect soap dispensers, toothbrush holders, styling tools, even your perfume and cologne bottles.
Clean all cabinets and shelving from the inside out. Don’t forget about the walls! Kitchen walls may require extra attention to remove grease buildup and areas where food splashes onto the surface.
*Pro Tip: Before you begin disinfection mania, open a window or two and/or run the bathroom fan to ventilate the cleaning fumes.
