Flu season is in full swing! Today we’re discussing several things you can do to keep your home germ-free throughout the winter.
TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF
The first step to keeping germs out of your house is to keep the people in your house healthy. Make sure everyone under your roof does these three things.
GET A FLU SHOT
Flu viruses are constantly changing which means the vaccine is regularly updated. Everyone over six months old should be vaccinated annually. Flu vaccines are offered in many locations, including doctor’s offices, clinics, health departments, pharmacies and college health centers, as well as by many employers, and even in some schools.
WASH YOUR HANDS – OFTEN!
Be sure to wash your hands multiple times per day: before & after eating or handling food, after going to the bathroom, after feeding, petting, or cleaning up after your pet, after taking out the garbage, and after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose. Basically, when in doubt, wash your hands. It’s also important to wash the proper way. Use warm water and soap and scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds.
MAKE HEALTHY CHOICES
To boost your immune system and keep the flu away, make healthy choices daily. Get plenty of rest, eat a healthy diet with fruits and veggies, exercise regularly, and drink lots of water.
KEEP YOUR HOME GERM-FREE
You can keep germs out of your home by using these cleaning strategies.
DAILY CLEANING
Wipe down the most used areas of your home daily. This includes:
- Countertops
- Doorknobs
- Refrigerator Handle
- Kitchen & Bathroom Fixtures
- Any additional high-traffic areas
This may seem like a chore, but it’s nothing compared to being out with the flu. Stock up on cleaning wipes and place them throughout the rooms of your house.
WEEKLY CLEANING
You should be cleaning the floors in your home weekly. This includes vacuuming, sweeping, and mopping. Germs hide everywhere.
PRE & POST SEASON CLEANING
Consider having your carpets, tile, hardwood floors, and upholstery professionally cleaned before and after flu season. If the flu virus struck your home, definitely hire someone to clean up during the postseason.
