Dusting: a chore on which pretty much everyone can agree is the worst. Dust is quick, it’s everywhere and can sometimes seem impossible to get rid of. Even though it’s a huge pain, thorough dusting is an important task, as the dust in your home tends to be much more than just some specs of dirt that make you sneeze. In fact, what was once thought only to be lint, pollen, and pet dander has actually been found to include 45 potentially hazardous chemicals!
With that being said, let’s jump into a few tips for easy DIY dusting.
MICROFIBER, MICROFIBER, MICROFIBER
Kick those feather dusters to the curb. Microfiber cloth towels are electrostatic and attract dust instead of scattering it, saving time and cleaning better! Not to mention that they’re also electronics-friendly.
WORK DOWN, NOT UP
Starting with the highest areas in your home (such as ceiling fans and light fixtures) before moving all the way down to the furniture and floorboards will save you from having to go back over the same surfaces more than once. Clean smart, not hard!
DON’T FORGET THOSE VENTS
Replacing your air filters often (every 30 days or so) is a foolproof way to combat dust in one of the most effective ways possible, as they can be one of the most significant sources of dust and allergens throughout your home.
BE THOROUGH
While most dust is easy to spot, try to think of some hidden or harder-to-reach places that you may not have considered.
- Behind furniture and appliances
- Behind doors
- Walls
- Ceilings
- On top of cabinets
The list goes on and on. Take the time to inspect every corner of your home — you’ll thank yourself later!
DUST: NOT TO BE SLEPT ON
Over time, mattresses, couches, and other furniture throughout your home tend to experience a build-up of pet dander, dead skin flakes, and dust mites if left uncleaned. Every time you wash your bedding and pillows, take some time to vacuum your mattress and use your vacuum’s soft bristle attachment to take care of that living room furniture while you’re at it.
SHOES OFF!
Most dust that finds its way into your home actually does so on the bottom of shoes. Implementing a no-shoes policy is a great way to tackle the problem before it has a chance to happen!
Dusting may be a dreaded chore, but it’s one of the most important. Keep these tips in mind as you tackle this task to help you and your family breathe easier.
