Water damage in a home is a problem that can be very costly in more ways than one. The worst part is that there’s no way of anticipating when disaster will strike. While the damage that comes from Mother Nature is impossible to control, water damage due to plumbing emergencies doesn’t have to be!
Recovery is a tough process, so here are some things you can do to prevent water emergencies from happening.
1. STAY AHEAD OF FROZEN PIPES
A frozen pipe means breakage, and breakage means water damage to your home and the items inside of it. Set some time aside to prep your pipes for the freezing weather — you’ll thank
us later!
2. KEEP GUTTERS AND DOWNSPOUTS CLEAN
Debris in your gutters and gutter downspouts can cause a back-up of drain water that can
ultimately make its way to where it’s not supposed to be, thus causing damage that’s a lot
harder to clean up than a little bit of leaf debris.
3. CHECK APPLIANCES REGULARLY
Head into the parts of your home that rely heavily on the presence of water (such as bathrooms,
laundry rooms and kitchens) to check your appliance supply lines for wear, tear, damage or
leaks, and fix them as quickly as possible to prevent further damage. While you’re there, take a
second to inspect the walls and floors around them to ensure that damage hasn’t already
begun!
4. SEAL GAPS IN ANY OLD OR DAMAGED CAULKING
Doors, windows, bathtubs, and sinks all have caulking that is essential for preventing leaks.
When this caulking fails, it can mean water making its way into areas where it’s unwanted!
5. DON’T POUR GREASE DOWN DRAINS
Don’t take the easy way out! Tossing that leftover grease down the drain may be the easiest
way to dispose of it, but it’s also super harsh on your pipes. To protect the longevity of your
pipes and prevent breakage and damage, opt for alternate storage or disposal methods,
Instead!
These are just a few of the best ways to stay ahead of water damage issues, but in the event
that they can’t be avoided, it’s best to deal with them quickly to stop the damage from getting
any worse. That’s where Carpet Tech comes in! We offer full-service water damage restoration
